This [2010 4runner SR5 2wd]
with this
Toyota 2TR-FE 2.7 liter I4. 157 rachus ponies and 178 lbs-ft. You got 1 better mpg on the highway but had to give up 113 hp and 100 lbs-ft of torque.
I can’t even imagine driving something this heavy with the same basic trans as as my land cruiser but with 55 less hp and 97 less lbs-ft. it would be downright undrivable at elevation with a load.
They dropped it after 1 year and never looked back. good luck trying to even find one for sale.

I knew they made this but thought it was some sort of fever dream I couldn't get out of my head.

There’s a epa rating that’s not at all realistic, under load that little guy has to only return 3 mpg

Same powertrain as the 2014 base Tacoma I’ve been driving 6 years for my work. I bet it’s a dog in extended cab 4x4 models. Thus on the 4Runner, it’s gotta be like a pile of dead dogs.

Given that it’s over 900 lbs heavier than the Tacoma empty, and based on my experience driving it around with gravel bags, a set of tires, tools, and sometimes one passenger: ... No. No I cannot imagine. Hopefully no one ever experienced such an event.
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Is there a sticker on the window that says “not intended for sale in US markets.”

Most RWD SUVs get sold in the Southern US . You know there’s an old geezer somewhere in Buttfuck Texas that bought one of these.

We had one of those as a rental for work when they were new. Going through the mountains in Colorado with 3 guys and tools it was very comparable to driving an old Scout 2(I6) .
It made me completely write off the 4Runner forever.

The insulation contractor I hired back in 2011, had a crew cab Tacoma with that power train. He very much regretted that purchase. He was very jealous of my V8 powered crew cab Sierra, that got the exact same gas mileage as he did.

It probably gets worse economy in real world use than the more powerful engine as well.
Who the hell would buy that?
